February Happy Hour: Gold Dust Lounge
After a brief holiday hiatus, it’s time to get back to HeritageYP! Join us next Wednesday for a special night at the Gold Dust Lounge, a threatened historic watering hole near Union Square. The Gold Dust Lounge has been quenching locals’ thirsts since 1933, but recently made headlines when it was announced the bar’s lease may be terminated. We’ve arranged for a special talk by the owners about the history of the bar, so come show your support for the Gold Dust next week!
Advocacy Alert!
There are some important hearings about San Francisco’s preservation legislation coming up next week: the proposed revisions to Articles 10 and 11 will be heard by the Historic Preservation Commission on February 1 at 12:30pm, and by the Planning Commission on February 2, time TBD. Visit Heritage’s website for updates and information. We hope you can attend and show your support for Preservation!

Co-sponsored by the National New Deal Preservation Association

The 1930s–the era of the New Deal–saw a blossoming of public art throughout the country, much of it the result of relief programs for unemployed artists. San Francisco contains several important murals from that decade, many of which show the influence of Diego Rivera, the great Mexican muralist. Victor Arnautoff, the artist of the Presidio Chapel mural, was one of San Francisco’s most prolific mural painters of that decade. This program begins with the Presidio Chapel mural, then considers Arnautoff and his work in the context of the time. The mural and the program are wheelchair accessible.
Admission: $ 10 at the door

The Future of Digital Archiving
On September 15, HeritageYP sponsored a lecture on “The Future of Digital Archiving” as part of San Francisco Architectural Heritage’s annual lecture series. We had a great turnout and our speakers, George Oates and Raj Kumar, from the Internet Archive were engaging and provided us with information, links to interesting online archives, and many new things to ponder in regards to the way archiving, records management, and historical research will happen in years to come. They are doing some great work and we all look forward to seeing (and utilizing) the results. Below is a link to the presentation that was given. If you missed it, or want a recap, take a look!
