Free Film Festival about Architecture

During the month of September, watch free movies about architecture and the built environment!

AIA San Francisco’s Architecture and the City Festival runs from September 1 through September 30, 2010. The festival’s film series celebrates the relationship between architecture and celluloid through documentary films, which spotlight the built environment, the architectural profession, and the ever-mythical architect’s ego.

A different film will be shown on Wednesday evenings at 6 pm at the San Francisco Main Library, Koret Auditorium. The films are free, but registration is required. The films include:

  • The Last Wright (Sept. 1): “This film offers a provocative, ironic tapestry of an American century, tracing the life, death and rebirth of a Midwest downtown through the prism of The Park Inn,” a hotel designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
  • Make No Little Plans: Daniel Burnham and the American City (Sept. 8): The film explores Burnham’s “compelling concept of what a civilized American city could look like that provided a powerful framework for Americans to make sense of the world around them.”
  • Infinite Space: The Architecture of John Lautner (Sept. 15): “Infinite Space traces the lifelong quest of visionary genius John Lautner to create ‘architecture that has no beginning and no end.’”
  • A Necessary Ruin and Other Architectural Shorts (Sept. 22): This film presents a “compelling narrative” about Buckminster Fuller’s Union Tank Car Dome, located north of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Constructed in 1958, it was the largest clear-span structure in the world. The evening also features The Image of the City and So What?, among other architectural shorts, followed by a conversation with the filmmaker.
  • FLOW (Sept. 30): “Irena Salina’s award-winning documentary investigates what experts label the most important political and environmental issue of the 21st Century—The World Water Crisis.”
  • Visit AIA San Francisco’s website for additional information about the film festival.

Governor: No state parks to close

Under fire from park supporters and the state’s own attorneys, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said today that no state parks will be completely closed to help solve the state’s budget woes.

Instead, the governor’s new plan, which some say is little more than a shell game to save face, would slash $14.2 million from the park budget this year by closing campgrounds and facilities on weekdays, reducing seasonal and administrative staff and cutting back on things like bathroom cleaning.

The idea is to allow all 279 state parks to remain open this fiscal year. More options would be explored Jan. 10 when legislators consider next year’s budget, according to a statement released this afternoon.

HeritageYP Invades Trad’r Sams for Polynesian Pop in the U.S.

On August 25, HeritageYP hosted a happy hour and lecture in one of San Francisco’s historic tiki bars, Trad’r Sams, which originally opened in 1941. Architectural Historian Christopher VerPlanck presented a brief lecture on the history of Polynesian Pop in the United States. His lecture discussed the evolution of Tiki culture from its emergence in the 1930s as bartenders raced to invent the most imaginative cocktails to the development of “High Tiki” in the 1960s as best seen in San Francisco’s famed Tonga Room.
