Join Heritage for its Semi-Annual Members Meeting on Tuesday, January 17 at 6 p.m. Typically held at the Haas-Lilienthal House, this year’s meeting will be hosted at the Swedenborgian Church. Members will have the opportunity to explore this one-of-a-kind building designed in 1895 by legendary architect Bernard Maybeck, and others. Heritage Executive Director Mike Buhler will provide an overview of Heritage’s recent work and important milestones during the organization’s 40th anniversary and the 135th birthday of the Haas-Lilienthal House.

The sole purpose of this special meeting of the San Francisco Preservation Consortium is to coordinate our advocacy efforts on behalf of strengthening Articles 10 & 11 of the Planning Code which will guide preservation in San Francisco for many years to come. Only those supporting the Historic Preservation Commission/Heritage/Consortium position should attend.

The 1930s–the era of the New Deal–saw a blossoming of public art throughout the country, much of it the result of relief programs for unemployed artists. San Francisco contains several important murals from that decade, many of which show the influence of Diego Rivera, the great Mexican muralist. Victor Arnautoff, the artist of the Presidio Chapel mural, was one of San Francisco’s most prolific mural painters of that decade. This program begins with the Presidio Chapel mural, then considers Arnautoff and his work in the context of the time. The mural and the program are wheelchair accessible.

Learn the history of adobe, examine methods for adobe repair, and make adobe bricks at this hands-on workshop taught by the Presidio Trust’s adobe experts. There will also be a tour of the rehabilitation in progress at the Officers’ Club. RSVP: rsvp@presidiotrust.gov.
